Two United Planes Skipped off Runways in 4 Months
May 16, 2008 · Print This Article
On October 9, 2007, and February 25, 2008, two United planes – both Airbus A320 – skidded off the runways during landing at O’Hare and Jackson Hole Airport.
Investigations later revealed that the problems were caused by crossed wiring on landing-gear brakes that caused the wheels to lock. According to safety experts, it’s very unusual for mechanical failures to cause this type of incident. But it is alarming that the same problem happened twice in four months.
During the February-25 incident, after the plane skidded off the runway at “a 90-degree angle”, the aircraft’s engine caught on fire. One of the evacuation slides failed, as passengers tried to jump from the plane. Click HERE to read more about what happened on those flights.
